How to Catch Stocked Trout – 3 Tips For Catching More Stocked Trout
Anytime that fishing is discussed, especially early in the year, the subject of stocked trout no doubt comes to mind, and when the subject of stocked trout comes to mind so does the question of how to catch stocked trout. Trout are “stocked” or “planted” in many waterways throughout the United States and fishing for them is a favorite activity for many anglers.
In this article I will outline 3 tips for catching more stocked trout so you will never again wonder how to go about fishing for these human raised, multi colored beauties. Trout that have been planted are normally much easier to catch than trout that have been born or lived naturally in a body of water for an extended period of time. The key to catching stocked trout consistently is to follow some simple rules.
These tips are being listed in no particular order and have been found to all be of equal importance during my past two decades of fishing.
Choose The Correct Trout Bait – Stocked trout tend to eat very different baits than their indigenous cousins. As a general rule live or natural trout baits aren’t nearly as effective as manufactured trout baits such as Berkley Powerbait and the like when fishing for stocked trout. Artificial baits such as spinners, spoons, and flies can be effective and will catch a few stocked trout, but as a general “rule” planted trout prefers manufactured trout baits. A great way to employ manufactured trout baits is a bottom fishing rig. Still fishing (or bottom fishing) with manufactured trout bait is an excellent tactic for catching stocked trout.Use The Proper Fishing Hooks – When it comes to fishing hooks the most important factor is the hook size. For most fishing applications size 8 or size 10 fishing hook should be employed. Fishing hooks that arelarger than size 8 should be avoided in almost all trout fishing scenarios. Another great tip when it comes to trout fishing h
ooks is to use a set of gang hooks. Gang hooks are simply two small fishing hooks tied back to back, thus enabling you to present twice as much manufactured trout bait on your bottom rig. A bottom rig made with a set of gang hooks and baited with Powerbait (or similar floating trout bait) is and excellent way to catch stocked trout.Don’t Be Afraid To Experiment – Just having one color or style of manufactured trout bait is not a good idea because you never know what type/color will be the most effective on a given day, which is why experimentation is a key to success. My “rule of thumb” is to try a particular color bait for an hour, checking it after a half an hour if I receive no bites, and then trying a different color until I find one that receives bites. Once you find the color/type that is working on a particular day, it will tend to work for most of the day and is the color/type that should be used on that day.
